Eco-Sustainability Applied to Small and Medium Enterprises

“Necessity is the mother of invention.”

Plato

Who speaks of eco-sustainability in developing countries? Not many. But there is plenty of talk about sustainability. From the principle that sustainable is all that can be upheld at a certain rate or level when we want to cite actions related to improving the quality of life and the environment, we are referring to eco-sustainability. It is a fact that eco-sustainability today is a tremendously appealing communication tool used by large corporations. But the great strength of developing countries is small and medium enterprises. And what would be the advantages of adopting these celebrated environmentally positive new measures in this novel market? Countless.

For starters, one has to understand the process of removing negative emissions as two tools of paramount importance: marketing and communication.

When a company carries out a negative emission removal or mitigation plan, whether it is pollution or GHG, through proper actions, with a detailed monitoring plan, via the collection and presentation of easily understood objective evidence, it is communicating a concern for the environment which the end-consumer will translate into trustworthiness, quality and deserving of loyalty.

At the same time, the application of eco-sustainability within a company will bring with it a revision of the entire production process, with fine adjustments related to energy loss, water reuse, fuel changes, etc. From this standpoint alone, there are reductions of up to 30% in specific energy consumption (amount of energy input needed to generate a certain amount of a product).

When we watch the not-always-correct but repetitive multimillion-dollar campaigns of large companies related to eco-sustainability, we have the impression that the topic is accessible only to a privileged category. That is far from the truth. Small projects, innovative projects, can bring incredible results and often with minimal investments. Most importantly, we need to keep in mind that in this new economy, this green market, nothing is set in stone. We are all learning, and everyone can make a difference.

It is worth remembering that education and common sense form the basis of a person committed to the environment. And that is precisely where the actions commence that can significantly alter the life of our Planet for the better. Not throwing trash out of the car (neither a cigarette butt) should already be customary by now, but it still amazes me to see the piles of litter next to highways. If you can walk or ride a bike to work, leave the car at home. Show the beauty of a flower, the ebullience of a tree, and the grace of a squirrel to a child. Allow yourself the perplexity to learn that Nature does not produce garbage. Demand solutions from politicians to the colossal environmental liabilities of the city since only four percent of home-recycled trash has a correct destination. Enter Nature and understand yourself as part of it. From there, think about doing the same with your company.
