Emerging Properties

Synergy is better than my way or your way.  It’s our way.”

Stephen R. Covey

When the sum of the parts results in something larger and more functional.  This is the classic definition of an emergent property.

In medicine, specialization begins to give way to generalists who understand that the sum of the parts is not enough when it comes to emergent properties.

In computer science, Stephen Hawking's frightening prediction seems to make perfect sense:  The human race will be destroyed by artificial intelligence, in a clear demonstration that what emerges from the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

In quantum mechanics, as in Complexity Theory, the interrelationship of patterns leads to emergent properties.  For good and for bad.

Advancing through quicksand, let us take consciousness.

From the beginning, high-energy particles will surely have an organizing principle, and as Richard Dawkins would say, the fact that we do not recognize it is a problem of our ignorance.

From there, properties emerge whenever a level of complexity reaches its maximum entropic moment, where there is a disruption (chaos) or evolution to a more complex level.  It is important to note that the emergent properties are not observable until the next cycle of complexity has stabilized.  That is, the evaluation is always ex-post since it depends on the perception of what has happened.

That is, the behavior of a complex and organized set, such as the human being, can never be explained by a mechanistic approach, no matter how meticulous it is and even if it begins with its elementary particles.

The whole is always greater than the sum of its parts.
