“If your social consciousness seems stuck in 1975, 2024 is going to be a rough ride.”
John Scalzi
A theory of consciousness that can truly be defined as such will explain how we evolve from a sentient state in which we share cognitive processes with other organisms to the capacity for reflection, judgment, belief, and self-awareness.
Obviously, this theory would assume that human consciousness is not limited to biology, but evolves from the complexity of interrelationships not only with other human beings but with the entire web of life.
Today, explanations for the phenomenon of consciousness are based almost exclusively on the relationship between the individual's mind and body.
In contrast to Aristotle, who wisely stated that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, today's understanding of consciousness focuses on the functioning of the brain. With this kind of individualization, it is clear that the totality of the interrelationships of mind and body with other minds and other bodies is lost.
And the obviousness of communication between organisms as a preponderant factor in the development of their complexity lies precisely in the emergence of homo: it cannot have been a first, it cannot have been a baby.
Scientifically speaking, it is only the complexity of interrelationships that coordinates -in the most diverse arrangements- the potentialities, possibilities, and probabilities that allow the occurrence. Be it a flower or a homo.
And the mold is found in social consciousness.
