The Genius of Newton

“You don't have to be a genius to recognize one. If you did,

Einstein would never have gotten invited to the White House.”

Tom Robbins

In our poor dichotomous worldview, a new proposition -as a rule- relegates the previous one to ostracism, to obsolescence.

It's true that quantum mechanics is wild, fascinating, hermetic, and challenging, but that doesn't mean that Isaac Newton wasn't one of the greatest geniuses in human history.

If we look at the solar system as a perfectly oiled cosmic machine that obeys extremely rigid deterministic laws, we cannot say -in the face of quantum mechanics, Chaos, or Complexity- that Newton was wrong.

And here fits perfectly Mandelbrot,'s nonchalance, which comes as an absolute shock to us: countless dimensions in the relative perspective of reality, or simply, fractals.

Within Newton's approach, the determinism we find in the straight and uniform motion of a car is exactly the same as that which operates the solar system: ideal, segmented, and extremely inviting.

And it is only from a different perspective that we observe Chaos, where the unpredictable is never far from the predictable.

The initial motion of the planets around the sun went from unpredictable to ordered in no more than 1% of the age of the universe.  It is absolutely clear that a small deviation in the path of one of them could end our existence.

And therein lies Newton's genius.  This remote but real possibility of an end is not new.  It was not quantum mechanics that raised this dramatic possibility.  No.  Newton did.

And yet, within the reality of his time, the genius physicist chose to select and emphasize those situations in Nature that evolve in a deterministic and therefore reassuring way.  Situations that human reason could matrix.

The rest he left in the hands of his God.
