“We are fragile creatures, and it is from this weakness,
not despite it, that we discover the possibility of true joy.”
Desmond Tutu
If there is a slight change in Pluto's speed, it can tilt and its orbit can go from regular to chaotic. Regardless of its demotion as planet.
In classical physics, the solar system is probably the ultimate expression of a well-oiled machine. Deterministic laws, for all their difficulty, find a heightened moment of certainty in contemplating it.
But it wasn't always so. Worse, no one can guarantee that it will be. The next moment, or the next, or the next.
For the impossibility is never far from its counterpart.
After a few million years of chaotic orbits, the planets in our system have returned to harmony. But Newton's genius led him to a startling conclusion. This harmony is all related to the most fragile instability.
According to physics, there can be no effect without a cause, but the causes and their interactions are exponential, which makes linearity impossible.
And it was Newton who first proposed the relationship between cause and imagination.
Which brings us to le Verrier.
The French astronomer who discovered Neptune made his way back. He calculated the relationship between the Sun's gravity (274m/s2!!!!), its distance, and its effect on the planets. From this, he deduced that there had to be an eighth planet.
And it became Neptune.
