Authenticity in Science

“Just because you're naked doesn't mean you're sexy.

Just because you're cynical doesn't mean you're cool.”

Tom Robbins

Benoît Mandelbrot was a genius.  A Jew and a product of World War II, he did not have a traditional academic background, yet he proved to the rector of the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris that he belonged there.

Despite having discovered the mathematics that explains life, Mandelbrot was never awarded a Nobel Prize.

Why was that?

First of all, because Benoît was an enfant terrible.  Cynical, caustic, and extremely critical, Mandelbrot was not suited to academia.  Mercurial, smug (and rightly so), and arrogant, he understood that once an idea had been presented, there was no need to refine it.  And many times, when someone tried to understand his proposals in depth, he simply fell silent.  Not because he couldn't explain them, but simply because of ancestral boredom that filled his soul.

And the academy does not forgive.

Classically, a physical theory is only valid if there is a mathematical confirmation, and vice versa.  However, the greatest geniuses in physics did nothing but think, and by concluding such thoughts, a new and solid framework was formed.

Geniuses don't need validation.  They need trust and support from a community that doesn't always understand them.
