Belousov, Zhabotinsky and Prigogine

“Entropy is the price of structure.”

Ilya Prigogine

Since the "accident" with the bad, bad Prigogine, founder of the Wagner terrorist group, another Prigogine, this one a good one, has never left my mind.

Like all Nobel laureates associated with quantum mechanics, Ilya went beyond.  Far beyond.

An integral and fundamental part of scientists who seek the philosophy behind quantum mechanics, Prigogine reaches the sublime when, in one of his books, he points to the end of certainties.

And that is extremely rare in science.

Even though it is entirely based on the imagination -and here it is essential to understand the definition of it proposed by a beyond-hermetic Jean-Paul Sartre- there is an almost syndicate tendency in the scientific community: "When we arrive at a segment of science that makes sense, let us dogmatize it."

It's impressive.  So when Prigogine brings out the magic of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction, where the solution goes blue and red and blue and red, or assumes fractal patterns that would make Mandelbrot jealous, he is not looking for the easy explanation of the bromine, water, and CH2 instabilities.

No.  Prigogine delves into the long-range correlations that appear in conditions of metastable equilibrium and proposes that matter is blind in equilibrium and begins to see when it moves away from it.

In other words, the sensitivity of matter is reflective in addition to inclusive equilibrium.  The most important aspect of this discovery, however, is the fundamental connection between dissipation and irreversible processes.

This is where the Arrow of Time dogma comes in.
