Enthalpy and Metávasi

“There ain't no such thing as a free lunch.”

Pierre Dos Utt

Considering an isolated system on the way to maximum entropy, how does the living being escape death (at least for as long as possible)?

"Buying" metávasi (Greek word meaning the transitional process from individualism to cooperativism) or simply feeding.  We don't eat to live.  We eat to avoid death!

Every living being eats and excretes.  The excrement of one being is food for another.  So basically, fundamentally, we are beating -or at least dodging for as long as possible- maximum entropy through a network of interrelationships.  Of wholes, within wholes, within wholes between wholes.

And the interrelation of ontototalities (minimal totalities) that blossom into phylototalities (system of totalities) occurs at the most elementary level, but is full of individual characteristics that can only be approached through complexity.

It is in the energy required for interrelationships that we find the deepest meaning of enthalpy.

In chemical terms, enthalpy is the energy involved in a reaction.  It is not the static definition of potential energy, but a transition, a metastable availability of something about to happen.

The idea of "buying" metavasis is almost poetry in terms of the energy given to a relationship to stabilize the context.

Take, for example, the Fukushima nuclear accident.  There was a 7.3 earthquake.  Then a tsunami over 30 meters high.  Then several post-earthquake tremors.  In optimistic projections, the explosion of the reactors would make more than a third of the Japanese territory uninhabitable, affecting 50 million people.

For more than 10 days, the local team did the impossible.  Always with education, respect, and kindness.  The Tepco workers knew they were going to die, yet they pumped water, looked for alternatives, and worked.  They would fight until the moment of the chain explosion they were sure would happen.  And they stayed there.

The reason the system stabilized and the explosion did not occur is completely unknown to us.

Enthalpy and metavasis.
