Primary and Reflective Consciousness

“I will not let anyone walk through my mind with their dirty feet.”

Mahatma Gandhi

Until we reach consciousness, we certainly pass through sentience on our way to episcience.  Both sentience and episcience will be the subject of future articles.  For now, I'd like to focus on the moment when the leap is made, the bone is thrown, in 2001: A Space Odyssey.  The moment we stopped living under the sentient aegis of fight or flight and began to evaluate possibilities.

The first stage is primary consciousness or the atavistic notion of "being."  The second stage occurs when we glimpse our own existence.  The perception of the Arrow of Time instantly installs the sword of Damocles over our heads, because we are going to die.  The I is going to die.

I think we can assume that filial cannibalism, present in a large number of species, must have been shared by the first sentient humanoids.  Thus, it does not seem impossible to me that reflective consciousness occurs in Cro-Magnon, the first homo to bury his dead a hundred thousand years ago.  It is there that the homo sees his future and, in an Augustinian way, does not do to others what he does not wish for himself.  Instead of being eaten or decomposing, they are buried.

One hundred thousand years.  Compared to 4.5 billion years of Earth and 3.5 billion years of life on Earth, we are babies, as conscious beings.

This explains -without ever justifying- our predatory behavior: as children, we are incapable of assessing the consequences of our actions, and instead of enjoying the miracle of self-reflection, we follow an insane path of destruction of the planet.

Reflective consciousness is not only the one that allows us self-awareness, but the one that reaches the sophistication of reflecting on its own nature; contradicting Gödel's Incompleteness and opening the doors to Satori.

It's everyone's choice.
