Science is not Wisdom

...disbelief in magic can force a poor soul

into believing in government and business...”

Tom Robbins

I think that all those who study quantum mechanics beyond its practical applications; all those who are awed by its wild, mysterious, and challenging beauty, reach difficult personal moments.

For me, it has always been the questioning of time, space, matter, of what is real.

When I read Fritjof Capra's The Tao of Physics, I was studying for my first degree in engineering and –above all- mechanics.  Capra's parallels between striking and similar understandings of Buddhist concepts and high-energy physics made me feel as if the ground had been pulled out from under my feet.

The sophistication of the Taoist points of view led me to believe in an impossibility, where perhaps the most sophisticated science could be, if not explained, at least made more flexible by wisdom.

As far as we know, there have been some famous divorces.  One, between science and religion, during the Industrial Revolution.  Another, between physics and mathematics, was when quantum mechanics was discovered.

Of course, you don't want to look into the guts of a pigeon to see if there's a boson that carries matter; not at all.  But could we not add something to our scientific approach by exploring the Buddhist concept of the non-existence of ultimate reality?

That's what I've been doing, since the day I understood the Theory of Relativity, which has absolutely nothing to do with quantum mechanics.
