State of Vogue

“When I die I want to go to Vogue.”

David Bailey

From the moment I wrote Being Data, data, additional data, interrelationships of patterns, emergent properties, ordered islands –among many, many, other concepts- populate my neocortex, while the limbic system oscillates between euphoric and miserable, and the reptilian does not care.

In 1970, Paul MacLean began developing his theory of the triune brain. It is such an absolutely out-of-the-box proposition that MacLean did not feel comfortable making it public until 1990.

For MacLean, the chassis of our brain would be the reptilian portion, formed hundreds of millions of years ago. On it, the limbic system -formed 150 million years ago- would be the center of our emotions, which we only share with other mammals. And finally, the neocortex, which supposedly developed tens of millions of years ago and whose sophistication we share with whales and dolphins.

But what does Vogue have to do with our brains?

For me, a lot.

When I started writing State of Vogue (soon available in English), I did so based on my rapport with the magazine. As I look forward to the March and September editions; because Vogue Italia, USA and France are my favorites. Since I love MacLean's theory, I realize that Vogue creates an unprecedented bridge between the neocortex and the reptilian; where I have access to all information digitally, but I want the physical editions of the magazine.

Working with contexts, within contexts; interrelating contexts, I reach the couturiers that –for me- are fashion: Yves Saint Laurent, Yohji Yamamoto, Givenchy, Valentino, Dolce and Gabbana, Christian Dior. How they are –always in my perspective- linked to class, sophistication, to the sublime. Between reptilian and limbic, the dangerous links with BDSM.

In the second part of the book, I write about those who have incredible sensitivity to assess what we want at the present moment. In the third part, the reason why – I realize – Vogue is the guide that guarantees our reptilian sex, shelter, and food.

It is in the third part that I show how Vogue defines Consensus. That is where I demonstrate why Anna Wintour is the most powerful person on the planet.
