The Immortality of Matter

“Change alone is eternal, perpetual, immortal.”

Arthur Schopenhauer

In quantum mechanics, some (very few) of the particles we know are (practically) eternal.  Not the particle itself, but the stability of its pattern.  If so, is matter eternal?  In this model, the electron, the neutrino, and the photon would each have an estimated existence of 6.6x1028 years.

And here comes the question that won't go away: how to prove this immortality?

It is obvious that -within the Consensus- it is impossible for us to measure eternity.  What we do in the Standard Model is to give up the need to hypothesize the mortality of these three almost immortal particles.

WHAT?

Yes. We calculate the lifespan of the electron, the photon, and the neutrino to sublimate its needs. Something comparable to our understanding of the paintings of Picasso or Dalì.  It is the profound knowledge of form; the mastery of classical design that allowed them to sublimate form and give us -with clarity- the essence.

And just when we were about to understand this bit of quantum mechanics, it knocked us off our feet: according to the rules of Standard Model, the proton is much older than the Universe.

That's right.  In yet another challenge to logic, to Consensus, to our craziest theoretical musings, the proton has lived longer than the Universe.  The Universe that appeared in the Big Bang, 13 billion years ago.

And before that, there was nothing.

Just the proton?
