The Time of Science

“It is difficult to get a man to understand something,

when his salary depends on his not understanding it.”

Upton Sinclair

Quantum mechanics destroyed determinism.

It introduced probability into the laws of cause and effect.  Even if we do not find the immediate cause of an event -such as the disintegration of radioactive particles- it is absolutely clear that within quantum mechanics we can classify it as chance.

The scientist is very much like a child learning to ride a bicycle.  At first, she is afraid of everything, but as she explores her own abilities in relation to the environment, she becomes bolder.

When we move from necessity to chance, physics reintegrates imagination into the Universe.

Of course, when we do this, we are working with extremes.  This event: are we absolutely sure that it is a product of chance?

The two steps forward and one step back, typical of the trajectory of science, undoubtedly reflect the zeitgeist.  The spirit of the times.  When we live in a period of expansion, creativity, and flourishing, like the first 30 years of the 20th century, science advances beautifully and the Universe seems to conspire in its favor.

In dark times, of extreme mediocrity, as we live in today, quantum mechanics is routinely violated, if not ignored in its essence.

But the Chinese are there, with their beautiful wisdom.  Everything is cyclical.  Everything can be explained if we carefully consult the I Ching.
